Conclusion — Delta Optimization Is the Heart of Performance

Delta Lake is powerful — but only when optimized. An unoptimized Lakehouse is like a sports car with flat tires.

The Complete Optimization Checklist

  • Partitioning — partition by date, region, or business key. Never by high-cardinality columns.
  • Z‑Order — apply on your most-filtered columns, especially in Gold.
  • File Compaction — run regularly on tables with frequent small writes.
  • Vacuum — clean old files on a schedule. Respect your time travel window.
  • Schema Evolution — add columns carefully. Never break downstream consumers.
  • Merge Optimization — keep merges incremental, partitioned, and narrow.
  • Star Schema — model Gold properly. Fact + Dimension, not wide flat tables.
  • Aggregation Tables — pre-compute KPIs for high-traffic dashboards.
  • Direct Lake Tuning — Gold tables must be Delta-optimized for Direct Lake to shine.

These are the keys to high‑performance Lakehouses in Microsoft Fabric. Get this right and everything downstream — SQL endpoints, Direct Lake, Power BI — performs at its best.
